Mr. Beef was exactly what was expected. It was like being on the set of The Bear. There is one long family style table to sit at. They have a great Italian Beef and their onion rings were just ok. The service is intimidating but extremely nice once youve ordered, they are just trying to move the line.
Like most, I have been wanting to stop by and try since the bear aired. It's a typical feeling Chicago sandwich shop. They move you through quickly and have a strong system to get you your order fast. We got there for lunch at the right time because shortly after the line was at the door. I liked that the Italian beef was juicy though I could always use more juice hahah. It was a solid beef. The onion rings were also good - just out of the fryer. I was pretty full off just the sandwich so keep that in mind when ordering! I liked the long table in the connecting room - makes it easier to eat there and gives a community feel. People move in and out frequently so it's easy to find a seat.
After so many years of living in the city but never really making it here I did it. My cousin was visiting from out-of-town and really wanted to see this place and, to our surprise, where were hardly any people so we decided to go in and order an Italian beef and some fries. It's hard to say this isn't the best Italian beef I've had, which is saying a lot. I absolutely loved it. And not being much a fry guy, the fries were very, very good as well. There isn't much space to sit but the extension provides picnic tables where you could sit down and eat although there is nothing too fancy about it - which is on par with the rest of the place - and that's a good thing.
First time coming here - even though I've lived in Chicago for awhile! Definitely an experience. Went on a Saturday afternoon, there was a line out the door, but it moves super fast. They have making the food, etc. down to a science. Seating is extremely limited - a good place to grab and go. French fries and beef no peppers was good. Hot dog was a little rough - chewy. Stick with the beef, and you can't go wrong.
i'm literally carmen berzatto ok on the real tho: don't compare this to a philly cheesesteak. totally different thing. this is just a plain italian beef sandwich with gardenia + hot and/or sweet peppers if you want 'em. no frills, no nonsense. grease everywhere but that's how you know it's fresh and friggin' tasty. i think this place does it best. plus their cannolis are homemade and the one i had was fantastic. everyone inside the place was super nice, even though they could probably tell i was the most touristy tourist to ever tourist lol plus, if you are a fan of the bear... you'll notice that the set they built for the original beef of chicagoland is almost exactly identical to the inside of this restaurant and i think that's beautiful.
No frills sandwich shop. The line was out the door, but moved very quickly! They take card, but prefer cash, so prices are slightly more with card. I got the italian beef with hot and sweet peppers and a cannoli. Honestly I thought this place would be mid, but it was great. I even went back on my last day to get it again. The second time I also got the onion rings and fries. The Italian beef is great, you can customize it as well, but I'd recommend trying it straight with the hot and sweet peppers. It wasn't spicy, but added a nice texture and flavor difference. It's greasy, but in a nice and comforting way. The cannoli was okay to me, but I'm not a big fan of cannolis so maybe you'd like it better. The onion rings were better than the fries and weren't the sad flimsy onion rings you might get. They're nice and crunchy, without the floppy onion pulling out and slapping you in the chin. Overall, a must visit for a good and comforting sandwich. They also have a long community style table in the back people spread out at to eat
Food - 5/5 The food was delicious. I think it was well worth the wait. Ordered: Fries - 4.5/5 Super solid fries. They almost remind me of season fries you'd get at Fiveguys but better. Beef Sandwich (hot and sweet (but I think I was given the combo) - 5/5 I ordered the beef (hot and sweet) but I think I was given a combo. Whatever it was, it was dam delicious. The bread was soft and not because of the juice from the sandwich, but because it was fresh. Everything was tender and so flavorful. Hotdog (with everything on it) - 5/5 This is what I imagine a "Chicago dog" to taste like. Dressed it in the works and it was delicious. Cannoli - N/A I got this for my mom to try since she likes sweets. She said it was good, but I didn't try it so can't rate it. Service - 4.85/5 The staff is super efficient. I took points off because they were trying to be so efficient that my order was messed up and everything was all over the place. One person was handling it, then someone else took over and was trying to wrap it up and then they started to help another customer get their order started while the first person was cooking some of the food for my order and grabbing some stuff. Then the first person gave me a bag with half my order in it thinking I got everything. It was just a little bit chaotic and I didn't want to confuse everyone. In the end I got the right number of things I ordered but 1 of my 5 things was incorrect. Ambiance - 3.75/5 Don't come here with the expectation that's there's individual tables and someone going around bussing them when people are done. This is a small shop where the line wrap around the inside and you order at the counter. There's a room for seating and you'll be sitting at a long table on a bench with other people. Don't be a dick and be sure to clean up after yourself when you're done for the next person/party to sit down. Make sure also to be kind to others and don't hog table space since it is limited and there are lots of people who just want to sit and enjoy their meal also.
Tastes like most Italian beef & sausage in Chicago. Beef was on the dry side. Beef jus soaked in the bread was very good. I was more impressed with the house made giardiniera. It was flavorful and not too spicy. Service was polite and efficient. There's some seating but you should also plan to do carryout if it's packed.
NGL, it was probably one of my favorite eats while in Chicago and not because of The Bear, but simply due to the smackingly juicy and yummy sandwich: beef, hot&sweet with rootbeer. And I think, it was dipped. Soo good. By looking at it, you wouldn't think so but we truly devoured it and enjoyed it immensely. So there... Service was quick and friendly, and yes loud. There was a short line that moved fairly quickly. The ambiance was retro and the communal table was super elegant, facetiously.
